Colophon

How this site is built, and why it’s built that way.

Hand-written HTML. One CSS file, with the whole design-token system in custom properties. About 5 KB of vanilla JavaScript (under 2 KB gzipped), all of it progressive enhancement — the site works with scripting disabled. No framework, no build step, no dependencies. Deployed on Netlify from a Git repo.

Type. Newsreader for body copy, IBM Plex Sans for headings and chrome, IBM Plex Mono for metadata, series numbers, and glossary terms. Self-hosted as Latin-subset woff2 with font-display: swap.

Palette. Prussian Blue and Papaya Whip for the bound-ledger feel; Pale Slate for structure; Peach Glow as the one accent — a shape colour in light mode, a text colour in dark mode.

The full write-up — performance numbers, the case against a framework, the type-scale math — lands with Phase 4.
